GitHub Copilot models deprecated on October 19, 2026

GitHub Copilot will no longer support Gemini 3.7 Flash and GPT-5.x models, requiring admins to switch to newer alternatives.

Deprecation Announcement and Model List

GitHub announced that on October 19, 2026 it has deprecated a set of models used across Copilot experiences. The announcement cites the date and lists the models that will no longer be available.

The deprecated models include Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4 mini, GPT-5 mini, and Grok 4.5. Each model has a suggested replacement: Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6 Luna, and Grok 4.7 respectively.

Developers who rely on these models for code completion, inline edits, or Copilot Chat will need to update their workflows. The deprecation means that any integration that references the old model identifiers will stop functioning once the date passes.

Administrative Actions and Policy Updates

Administrators of Copilot Enterprise must enable the alternative models in their model policies. The policy must be enabled for the specific model before it appears in the Copilot Chat selector in VS Code or on github.com.

GitHub states that no action is required to remove the deprecated models from existing configurations. The system will simply no longer serve those models after the deprecation date.

Impact Assessment and ToolScout Analysis

Enterprise customers are encouraged to contact their account manager if they have questions or concerns about the transition. The support channel is highlighted as the primary resource for assistance.

From a tooling perspective, the shift to newer models may bring performance improvements but also introduces compatibility work. Teams must audit their Copilot usage, update model references, and verify policy settings. The trade-off is between the risk of disrupted development workflows and the benefits of newer model capabilities.
